I am surprised that a large section of my friends remember Sarah Palin quotes and use them to add political referencing to their jokes. Same with Chetan Bhagat.
Basically anything Chetan Bhagat writes becomes Page 3 or trash news or front page fiasco, because people remember his goof-ups and laugh at him. Most importantly the people who remember his stories and characters. What they don't realize is that a writer wants his stories to be remembered. Chetan may be a mass writer and a good one at that, but he wants to be remembered just like any other author. By quoting his quotes or repeating his stories you are furthering his brand at no extra cost.
Similarly the English speaking society has many reading levels. Most of my friends don't read Vonnegut or Palahnuik. That doesn't make me more well-read or less well-read than them.
The gist : If you ignore an artist --dancer, writer, musician , painter or poet, that's his greatest criticism.
